The Assignment: Yellowstone Grizzly Bears synthesis essay

Interactive Timeline
"Fish & Wildlife Service Proposes to Delist Yellowstone Grizzly:  Decision marks the second time the grizzly has faced loss of federal protection" by Gloria Dickie, 3/4/2016

Some excellent questions considered by this independent, non-profit news magazine that focuses on environmental issues in the West.

  • Would the grizzlies be better served by state conservation strategies rather than federal management?
  • What role does the rapid decline of the bear's primary food source (white bark pine nuts and cutthroat trout) play in causing the bears to roam more widely?  How has the switch to meat eating put both the bears and humans at risk?
  • Are the Yellowstone bears genetically isolated?

"Trump Administration Removes Environmental Protection For Yellowstone Grizzly Bears."
by Timothy Cama, 6/22/2017
The article from this centrist publication quotes people
from both sides of the issue.
Very useful for determining what factors led to the delisting
and for finding the names and viewpoints of key players.
Note the date of the article.  It was written before the delisting was vacated in federal court.
Read Judge Christensen's ruling.

Magazine of Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks
"Overdue:  State and federal agencies say it’s time to take Yellowstone region grizzly bears off the threatened species list". By Tom Dickson.  November-December 2016.

Looks at all sides of the issue, interviewing scientists, wildlife managers, conservationists, ranchers, etc.  Thoughtful background information.  Interviews with key stakeholders.

Has Science Become Politicized?

It is important to think critically about  all your sources, including the ones below.
When analyzing the content of an article, keep in mind not only the author's bias, but also your own.  What is the author's authority and affiliation?  How have they developed their argument?  Does it make sense to you?
